Nevada ASUN Recognizes World AIDS Day
Posted on Tuesday, December 1, 2020The Associated Students of the University of Nevada, Reno (ASUN) celebrates Dec. 1 as World AIDS Day in an effort to heighten awareness regarding the HIV epidemic. Communities on this day remind their governments and communities of the impacts of HIV and preventative measures available.
Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day became the first international day of health. Each year the United Nations agencies and civil societies join together on Dec. 1 to campaign around a specific theme related to HIV. This year’s theme is Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility.
HIV is a health crisis continuing to affect many families and communities globally. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS in 2019, 1.7 million people were newly infected with HIV. There are approximately 38 million people living with HIV. These numbers are strikingly high, and the COVID-19 pandemic shifted funding and support for resources.
To bring awareness to this ongoing epidemic, reach out to loved ones affected by the HIV crisis, and offer support to those affected. It is important to help our community heighten the discussion around HIV.
There are many significant ways our Wolf Pack community can show support on World AIDS day. Although in-person events are limited, there are ways to recognize World AIDS Day. Today, ASUN encourages the Wolf Pack community to wear a red ribbon to support and honor those with HIV. Below are educational links regarding the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and resources to help increase involvement within our Wolf Pack community.
World AIDS Day is important to the Nevada community and ASUN acknowledges that we must all take steps to learn about the impact of HIV so that we can communicate about ways of positively impacting the existing health crisis.
