His academic focuses on ethics, political philosophy, and social structures carries over a pragmatic approach to student governance, with a dedication to improving student engagement, civic participation, and representation and accountability of the Senate with the student population. He believes student government should not stop at advocacy for students, but also should provide outlets and opportunities for active, thoughtful engagement and mutual learning.
Phoenix has dedicated himself to fostering the academic communities at UNR, currently serving as a co-President of UNR's Philosophy Club and working as a consultant at the University Speaking and Writing Center. His experience within these positions has contributed to fostering the existing academic communities and has built his ethic in seeking to provide communities grounded in thoughtful, participatory engagement. Primarily, he is dedicated to making UNR’s intellectual life significantly more connected and embedded in everyday student experiences and has plans to carry this vision to his Senate role. Building and strengthening avenues between student organizations, policy, and the Senate, and strengthening the community within the College of Liberal Arts, is a primary motivation of his.
If elected, Phoenix intends to explore ways to utilize the ASUN budget to foster an interconnected, productive, and thoughtful academic environment here at UNR. Currently, he is thinking of exploring possible discussion events, reading circles, or panels as a means to provide structured spaces for students to participate in communities that connect them to their peers and the student government outside of the classroom. Another primary motivation of his is advocacy for equitable access to resources and representation across the College of Liberal Art's departments and student organizations.
