Stay of Campaign Finance Rules
Posted on Tuesday, March 9, 2021Associated Students:
Following the events of the 2021 Vice President Primary Election, I am issuing a stay of the
campaign finance laws for the 2021 General Elections in order to allow the ASUN Senate to
reevaluate the current stipulations present in the Statutes of the Associated Students and the
Candidate’s Packet. Upon reading comments from current and previous officers who also failed
to comply with campaign finance laws, it became apparent that this is an ongoing issue that
should have been addressed earlier. We, as an association, cannot continue to ignore the statutes
that govern us because it is convenient for us. If these rules are too difficult to follow, and
enforce, then they must be changed.
Despite this suspension, Director Finkler and I are still expecting all candidates to operate in
good faith and complete the budget forms to the best of their ability. However, we will not be
disqualifying candidates based on their budget forms alone.
I advise the ASUN Senate to review and revise the campaign finance laws in order to avoid
situations like this in the future.
